2019 – 2020 Young Artist Competition Winners

Nina Jaramillo

Overall Winner and Winds Division Winner

NINA JARAMILLO, Lawrence, is the Overall Winner and Winds Division Winner of the 2019-2020 Young Artist Competition. We are happy to announce that Ms. Jaramillo returned to perform the Concertino for Flute by Cecile Chaminade with the Topeka Symphony at the January 16, 2021 concert. She is the daughter of Lauren Jacobs and Joey Jaramillo. Nina has studied flute and piccolo for seven years and currently is a student of Annie Gnojek. Nina is a junior at Free State High School in Lawrence where she is Principal Flute for the Wind Ensemble. Nina also has performed with the Lawrence Youth Symphony for six years and has been a member of the John Phillip Sousa Honor Band, and Principal Flute for both the Kansas State High School Orchestra and the District Honor Band. Nina looks forward to living in New York City and playing in an orchestra.


Janna Dungao

Strings Division Winner

JANNA DUNGAO, Topeka, Violinist, is the Strings Division Winner of the 2019-2020 Young Artist Competition. Janna is a sophomore at Washburn Rural High School and is the daughter of Cristina and Jan Michael Dungao. Ms. Dungao performed Movements 2 and 3 of Violin Concerto No. 2 in D Minor by Henryk Wieniawski. Janna has studied violin for ten years and currently is a student of Zsolt Eder. In addition to playing in her high school orchestra and in the pit orchestra for school musicals, Janna is the Concertmaster for the Topeka Symphony Youth Orchestra. She has been a member of the Topeka Symphony Youth Ensembles since third grade. Janna also is an accomplished ballet dancer appearing in the Kansas Ballet Academy’s annual production of The Nutcracker. Janna is a member of the Students Against Prejudice Club and the Sources of Strength organization.
