The Topeka Symphony is pleased to announce our 21st annual SCHOOL DAY CONCERTS on Thursday, April 4, 2019. The Topeka Symphony Orchestra will present two performances designed for 5th through 8th grade students. The hour-long concerts will be at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the Topeka Performing Arts Center. As part of our 2018-2019 season theme, The Big Questions, this year’s School Day performances will feature music from our Will You Marry Me? concert. English composer Peter Maxwell Davies’ An Orkney Wedding, With Sunrise depicts a boisterous Scottish wedding, followed by the sun coming up after a night of parties and dancing. It is one of the only pieces for orchestra that features bagpipes! The orchestra also will perform music from Aaron Copland’s Pulitzer Prize-winning ballet Appalachian Spring which portrays a wedding party in a small village in Pennsylvania and features the Shaker hymn Simple Gifts. We’ll also be joined by the winner of this year’s TSO Young Artist competition who will perform their winning selection at these free concerts.
Through the generous support of Kaw Valley Bank, Cox Communications, Federal Home Loan Bank, Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, Security Benefit/SE2, Westar Foundation, and the Blanche Bryden Foundation, we again are able to present these concerts at no charge to the schools or students. Parking will be provided for buses. The Park and Shop Garage at 6th and Quincy, a city pay-per-hour parking garage, is available for individual cars.
